St Edward Harvest Half Marathon & 10k

REGISTRATION OPEN!

St. Edward Harvest Half and 10 k

Saturday, October 11, 2014, 9:30 a.m.

There are two course options for this event:

  • Half Marathon (13.1 miles, 21.1 km), with 2150 feet of elevation gain*
  • 10 km (actually 10.1 km, 6.3 miles) with 1060 feet of elevation gain*

St. Edward State Park is a gem of the Washington State Park system, due to the natural beauty of its natural forest areas and undeveloped waterfront along Lake Washington, its proximity to the Eastside and Seattle population centers, and its well-maintained amenities, including historic buildings, convenient parking, pleasant picnic areas, a phenomenal children's play structure, and many miles of wonderful trails for hiking, biking and running.

Bronsa Swint from On the Ball Fitness will be running the 10k! She will be available for informal Q&A regarding running-related injuries and issues, before and after the event.

Both courses make use of the same basic loop, which tours most of the park trails. The 10k course is one loop, and the Half Marathon is two loops.

Here is a route map.

The start is in the meadow just East of the parking area and the park offices. The route is mostly on the forest trails but also tours the grassy areas surrounding the historic seminary buildings to connect the forest trail loops. There is a nice mix of wider, straighter trails and narrower, winding trails. The course loop has two big hill climbs, but there are many flat or rolling sections, too.

* Distances were measured using a measuring wheel, and climb was measured using a detailed contour map. The distance is most likely within 1% of actual, and the climb within 10%.

Aid station

There will be two well-provisioned aid/refreshment stations, one located adjacent to the finish, and one just after the 4-mile point in the middle of the loop. 10k runners will have one aid station pass before finishing, and Half Marathon runners will have three aid station passes.

The refreshments will include at least water and some sort of carbohydrate-rich food, such as pieces of energy bar, bagel, fruity candy, and/or bananas. There will be a few choices of these foods, along with electrolyte-replacement drink.

Safety and Trail Etiquette

The park has requested that dogs not participate in this run, however they are allowed on-leash at the park, in case any friends/family/spectators would like to take the dog while you run.

The trails will be open to other users during the event, including pedestrians and cyclists (along a few of the trails). Please be courteous.

In places, the trails have sharp turns and bumps (rocks or tree roots), and it pays to pay attention to where you put your feet in such sections. In addition, there are a few turnstiles to keep bikes off foot-only trails and a couple wooden bridges, which will require some care to avoid falling from slipping or tripping. However, none of the trails are treacherous or demand any special skills or experience to navigate them. Anyone who is fit enough to hike or run the distance should be able to get through the course fine with a bit of care.

Participants are responsible for their own safety while participating, and the organizers are neither qualified nor equipped to render medical care in the event of a serious injury. In case of an emergency, call 9-1-1. You are encouraged to bring a cell phone with you as a safety precaution, if you wish.

Where the trails are narrow, please let other participants pass you if they want to get by. It is a passing runner's job to tell the person in front that they wish to pass.
