Ravenna Weeknight Run #3

Results | Photos from Louise Lakier Photography

Just north of the University District, Ravenna Park is one of Seattle’s most-coveted hideaways.  It’s easy to forget about the city once you enter the woods. Each course will direct runners through the park with trails lined with large trees that provide a thick canopy and along the creek that intersects the park.

There are three course options for this event:

  • 4.1 km (2.6 miles)
  • 8.2 km (5.1 miles)
  • 12.3 km (7.7 iles)

All courses start and finish by the picnic shelter in the meadow adjacent to the South parking lot off 20th Ave NE and NE 58th St. All courses use the same 4.1 km loop, with low to moderate climb (230 feet per loop) and nicely groomed forested trails. There are a few steeper pitches, but most of the course is gently sloping, as the course takes runners up and down the ravine.

Distances were measured using a measuring wheel, and climb was measured using the altimeter function of a Polar watch.

Aid station
There will be an aid station at the start/finish point, so runners doing the 8 km and 12 km distances will pass the aid station once and twice, respectively.

The aid station will have at least water and some sort of carbohydrate-rich food, such as pieces of bagel, fruity candy, fig bars, cookies, and/or bananas. There will likely be a few choices of these foods, along with electrolyte-replacement drink.

Safety and Trail Etiquette
The trails will be open to other users during the event, including pedestrians and bicyclists (on the main ravine trail only.) Please be aware of other park users, and share the trail, so that we can continue to offer events like this.

Most of the trails are well-groomed and easily runnable, but there are a couple short segments with roots, bumps, or other uneven spots in a few places. As always in a trail run, it's important to pay attention to where you put your feet. There are a couple short boardwalks that may slippery if wet.

Participants are responsible for their own safety while participating, and the organizers are neither qualified nor equipped to render medical care in the event of a serious injury. In case of an emergency, call 9-1-1. You are encouraged to bring a cell phone with you as a safety precaution, if you wish.

Where the trails are narrow, please let other participants pass you if they want to get by. It is a passing runner's job to tell the person in front that they wish to pass.
